Hotel Alexis at the Red Door

Even though there are no street advertisements or flyerings, it’s no secret that Portsmouth’s Red Door music venue, located directly above Dos Amigos, houses some of the most sought-after music. But the intimate martini bar was unusually packed last Monday because of the night’s Hush Hush Sweet Harlot series lineup composed of bands: Jerry Brookman, Moses Atwood and Hotel Alexis.
Crowding along the stage, on and between the sleek black furniture and tables and by the bar, long-haired patrons of the Red Door squeezed themselves into every crevice possible – local music veteran Dan Blakeslee included.
“The capacity is at its limit,” said Jay Boucher, booking manager.
However it wasn’t by chance that the crowds were drawn to the Red Door last Monday. Sidney Alexis, previous booking agent for the Red Door leaving in 2003, took the stage with his band Hotel Alexis.
“It’s sort of a homecoming of sorts for Sidney Alexis,” said Boucher.
The audience tapped their thighs and nodded their heads in approval and to the beat as Hotel Alexis belted out lyrics such as, “dogs barking all night long, the acid we took set in way too soon.” The four-piece rock band with songs influences by Americana, indie and old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll held the venue steady with its solid beats — played with brushes for a slightly softer touch at times.
“I’ve known them for years. I like how intense they are,” said Janna C.
Most of the audience enjoyed the lyrics contained in the music but a big drawing point seemed to originate from the band’s local ties.
“I’ve seen them live once before. Mostly on Monday night it’s local – it’s real. It reflects who we are,” said Jennifer Clayton.
Friends of the bands came to give support and special offerings.
“I came to throw my underwear at Jerry,” said Eddie Stack.
Some had martinis in their hands – most drank Pabst Blue Ribbon. With smiling faces, loud exclamations and a few good jostlings while some tried to find their way around, the venue had a feel-good buzz all around.
“I wanted Sid to do a return trip. Every show just tops the last. It’s good to have a show you couldn’t miss,” said Blakeslee.
