Foliage hunting: Where, and when, to find peak colors

Fall is my absolute favorite time of year. When the trees change colors through a sort of photosynthesized adrenaline rush, it produces a kaleidoscope of change — from deep greens come every shade of yellow and red imaginable. It just makes me stop and stare in awe and wonder.

In peak season, with the right conditions and view — whether it’s a single tree like the one near the post office on Daniel Street in Portsmouth, or a panoramic view along the Kancamagus Highway in the White Mountains — it just takes your breath away.

Foliage season in New England is the stuff of coffee table books — expensive coffee table books. But anybody who owns a camera is likely to snap off a few great photos they are particularly proud of, and this year we want you to share them with the World Wide Web. Starting this week and surely picking up steam as the weeks ahead progress, we’re inviting Seacoastconnects.com readers to post their favorite foliage pics in our photo gallery. Start today with some of your favorites from past years, and then add new ones as the colors change in the weeks ahead.

If you don’t want to wait for the colors to come to you, then there are two great Web sites to start peeking at right now that will give you the heads up regarding the evolving state of peak foliage season in Maine and New Hampshire. Check them out before heading on that road trip because a day or two on either side of the “peak” can make all the difference.

  • www.mainefoliage.com — As of Wednesday, the state of Maine’s official fall foliage Web site showed Northeastern Maine, including Fort Kent, Caribou and Presque Isle, as the only region that had reached its “peakness.” In addition to the up-to-date color reports, this site also has some neat interactive features, such as the “tips” forum where people from all around the state report on what’s happening with foliage colors, as well as the animated short film “Maine’s Autumn Magic: How Leaves Reveal Their Colors.” Very cool stuff.

  • www.foliage.visitnh.gov/index-flash.html — As of Wednesday, the state of New Hampshire’s official fall foliage Web site showed peak season to be in bloom all along the western border up to Canada, with the Great North Wood at or past peak season. The Lakes region, Merrimack Valley and the Monadnock region are all labeled as “Well established.”

So, what are you waiting for? Get out there, enjoy the fall season, and take some snaps. Those colors won’t last forever!
